Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global intravascular ultrasound market: Philips Volcano, Boston Scientific, GE Healthcare, and Siemens Healthineers.
Other prominent vendors in the market are: Avinger, Hitachi Aloka Medical America, Infraredx, Medtronic, Samsung Medison, Silicon Valley Medical Instruments, and St. Jude Medical.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from
Technavios team said: One of latest trends in the market is wireless
technology will propel market growth. Intravascular ultrasound devices
incorporate wireless features such as Bluetooth and nearfield communication to
deliver sophisticated connectivity between the individual and the physician.
These advances can help individuals to remotely send the results of scans to
the patients from the clinic to reduce the turn-around-time. Many researchers
are engaged in developing next-generation portable ultrasound devices that can
be integrated with smartphones. The MobiUS SP1 System, launched by MobiSante
not only provides imaging at point-of-care (POC) via smartphones but is
affordable and user-friendly. Unfortunately, there are no such devices for
intravascular ultrasound in the market, but are expected to enter the market
during the forecast period.
According to the report, one of the primary drivers in the market is advances in semiconductor technology develop efficient power saving intravascular ultrasound device. Semiconductor manufacturers are making efforts to develop efficient, innovative designs that consume less power. New semiconductor technology will develop the next generation medical devices. High power consumption is a major concern for many major hospitals as they require huge number of medical devices that need power 24/7. To meet the needs of the healthcare providers, many vendors are collaborating with semiconductor companies and focusing on developing such devices that are efficient, easy to handle and require less power.

Further, the report states
that one major challenge in the market is growth of used and refurbished
products hinder market growth. Used and refurbished portable ultrasound systems
are available at a lower cost than the new ones. In addition, many of these
devices come with vendor warranties. Further, customers from developing
countries have low awareness about refurbishment process and purchasing power.
Refurbished devices thus allow them to access the latest technology at a
significantly lower price. In addition, many end-users prefer buying products
from local vendors because doing so allows them to access better after-sale
services.

About Intravascular Ultrasound
Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a catheter-based diagnostic device that uses sound waves to view the inside of a coronary artery by providing a real time view. IVUS is also called intravascular echocardiography as it is a combination of echocardiography and cardiac catheterization. Intravascular ultrasound device comprises a specially designed catheter with small ultrasound transducer or probe that is connected to the distal end. The proximal end is attached to a computerized electrocardiogram machine with a monitor. This ultrasound equipment is used for monitoring the function of the heart and examining the structure. It measures the size of cavities, observes the functioning of arteries, ventricles, and valves, and detects structural defects.
Technavios analysts forecast the global intravascular ultrasound market to grow at a CAGR of 6.56% during the period 2016-2020.
