Global Radiation Hardened Products Market Size, Share, Analysis, Industry Growth and Forecast Research Report 2016-2020 Market Reports Center

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report Global Radiation Hardened Products Market 2016-2020

Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global radiation hardened products market: Honeywell Aerospace, Bae Systems, Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics, Atmel, Microsemi, and Xilinx.

Other prominent vendors in the market are: Cobham, VPT, Data Device Corporation, Linear Technology, Ridgetop, and Vorago Technologies.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “One of latest trends in the market is relaxation in export compliance for aircraft and satellite electronics suppliers. Agencies such as International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) of the US restrict the sale of defense-related electronics due to national security concerns. This has affected the US-based space and airplane electronics manufacturers and OEMs, including rad-hard electronics manufacturers. The ITAR might relax these regulations further for the supply of electronics for non-combat-related aircraft and commercial satellites. The regulations in place in the US was solely meant to keep technological know-how within the country. However, the departments of state and commerce in the US are bringing changes in the ITAR and Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The changes will allow US-based vendors to supply rad-hard electronics internationally and enable better competitive pricing and quality improvements among the vendors as most rad-hard electronics are expensive and hard to acquire.”

According to the report, one of the primary drivers in the market is growth of nuclear power plants. As of 2015, there are 444 nuclear reactors in 30 countries. The rising need for sustainable energy is driving the nuclear power reactor segment. Rad-hard versions or sensors, power control circuits, MPUs and MCUs, and rugged robots and cameras are some of the most commonly used rad-hard devices in nuclear reactors. Rad-hard electronics have the capability to withstand high-temperature conditions and radiation levels present in nuclear reactors. Also, monitoring equipment that is used in nuclear reactors often uses rad-hard electronics, although the exposure time of monitoring equipment to high-frequency radiations is low. Rad-hard electronics in nuclear reactors have also proved to be an economically viable option compared to conventional electronics due to longer shelf life. Also, the number of nuclear reactor installations across the globe is expected to increase. Between 2015 and 2025 we expect 63 new nuclear reactors to commence operations. Factors such as these will increase the adoption of rad-hard electronics in nuclear power plants.

Further, the report states that one major challenge in the market is growing preference for radiation-tolerant devices. The demand for strategic rad-hard components is driven by the dose rate requirements of applications such as satellites, high-altitude aircraft, and nuclear reactors. Rad-hard grades are driven either by total ionizing dose (TID) for GEOs or by systems requiring higher SEU assurances and lower memory upsets. Radiation-tolerant devices are used in LEO satellites and military systems or subsystems as they can handle the radiation exposure at those levels. Radiation-tolerant devices are cheaper and readily available than rad-hard products. Most radiation-tolerant devices can perform in radiation environments, with 30-100 Krad. Satellites constitute the largest segment that consumes rad-hard electronics. In 2015, it contributed 68.39% to the total revenue of the global rad-hard electronics market. Due to shrinking budget allocations for satellites programs, unmanned platforms and projects that are made for shorter life spans use radiation-tolerant devices. Radiation-tolerant devices are preferred mainly due to the high costs involved in the procurement of rad-hard products.

The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.

About Radiation Hardened Products

The report segments the market on the basis of the end-users: governments, military, commercial, industrial, and medical. It also mentions end-user applications with respect to satellites (which are used both by the government and the military), advanced electronics used in nuclear weapons, and avionics used in the aviation industry with respect to high-altitude aircraft. Rad-hard is a method used to make electronic components and semiconductors immune or resistant to radiation-induced malfunctions, mainly electromagnetic and particle radiation. The global rad-hard electronics market is expected to grow at a stable rate during the forecast period due to the increased number of nuclear power plants and satellites and high demand for these electronics from commercial satellites and military. Satellites require a larger share of rad-hard electronics compared with nuclear power plants or reactors.

Technavio’s analysts forecast the global radiation hardened products market to grow at a CAGR of 3.37% during the period 2016-2020.
